SUMMARY:Nomfusi: South African Soul-Diva - CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER
DESCRIPTION:2/7/26 UPDATE: Due to the extreme cold and snow-impacted travel/city-wide parking ban\, we have made the difficult decision to cancel tonight’s performance by Nomfusi at the Uptown Theater.  \nTicketholders will hear directly from the Uptown Box Office and will be issued a full refund to their original method of purchase.  \nWe sincerely appreciate all who purchased tickets in support of this amazing artist and her Providence program with FirstWorks. We look forward to sharing highlights from her educational matinee for 500 Providence high school students next week.  \n—————— \nThe soul of Mama Afrika meets the fire of Motown and Soul… in a pint-sized packet of dynamite. With over 30 international tours under her belt\, Nomfusi has become one of South Africa’s most sought-after performers worldwide. Indeed\, there is nothing small about the tiny songstress with the gigantic voice and tons of charm. With sheer will and determination\, she has risen from the squalor of South African squatter camps to some of the finest stages of the world. \nLikened by critics to a young Miriam Makeba with a twist of Tina Turner\, the multiple SAMA and Metro FM Award nominee embraces both her African heritage and the sounds of Soul and Motown she grew up with. Like a purifying wildfire that cuts through the bone\, her cathartic performances have been praised across the globe. \nCo-presented by FirstWorks and the Uptown Theater

This creative conversation will be moderated by composer and scholar\, Anthony Cheung. \nFormat: Watch the 40-minute streaming talk and Q&A below.\n\n \nWu Man and Sandeep Das will perform at The VETS on November 9th as part of Silkroad Ensemble’s “American Railroad” concert tour this November. Thank you to our presenting partners! \nNov. 7: Quick Center for the Arts. Fairfield\, CT\nNov. 8: Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center. Barrington\, MA\nNov. 9: The VETS\, presented by FirstWorks. Providence\, RI\nNov. 13: The Colonial Theatre. Keene\, NH \nABOUT SILKROAD\nA Grammy Award-winning musical ensemble\, Silkroad is a collective of artists representing dozens of nationalities\, traditions and ideas\, who use music and art to demonstrate how great beauty can emerge from great difference. The Ensemble strives to engage difference\, sparking radical collaboration and music with a purpose\, for a more hopeful and inclusive world. \nABOUT WU MAN\nWu Man belongs to a rare group of musicians who have redefined the role of their instruments\, in her case\, the pipa\, a pear-shaped\, four-stringed Chinese lute with a rich history spanning centuries. Not only is she recognized as the foremost pipa player in the United States\, but she is also celebrated as an accomplished composer\, educator\, and one of the most prominent instrumentalists of traditional Chinese music. She has premiered hundreds of new works for the pipa\, while spearheading multimedia projects to both preserve and create awareness of China’s ancient musical traditions. Her adventurous spirit and virtuosity have led to collaborations across artistic disciplines\, allowing her to reach wider audiences as she works to cross cultural and musical borders. \nABOUT SANDEEP DAS\nA Guggenheim Fellow\, Sandeep Das is one of the leading Tabla virtuosos in the world today. Since his debut concert at the age of 17 with legendary Sitar player Ravi Shankar\, Das has built a prolific international reputation spanning over three decades. He has collaborated with top musicians\, ensembles\, and orchestras from all over the world\, and his original compositions have been performed in 50+ countries. Das is the founder of Harmony and Universality through Music (HUM)\, a nonprofit organization in India that has promoted global understanding through music performance and provided learning opportunities and scholarships for visually-impaired children with artistic potential since 2009.  His most recent project\, Transcending Borders One Note at a Time\, launched in 2020 to widespread international acclaim\, and seeks to harness the power of music to create positive social change. \nABOUT ANTHONY CHEUNG\nAssociate Professor of Music\, Brown University\nComposer and pianist Anthony Cheung writes music that explores the senses\, a wide palette of instrumental play and affect\, improvisational traditions\, reimagined musical artifacts\, and multiple layers of textual meaning. Described as “gritty\, inventive and wonderfully assured” (San Francisco Chronicle) and praised for its “instrumental sensuality” (Chicago Tribune)\, his music reveals an interest in the ambiguity of sound sources and constantly shifting transformations of tuning and timbre. His music and commissions have been performed at festivals around the world. He was a co-founder of the Talea Ensemble\, performing as a pianist and serving as artistic director. The recipient of a 2016 Guggenheim Fellowship\, he has also received awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (Charles Ives Fellowship and Scholarship) and ASCAP\, and first prize in the Sixth International Dutilleux Competition (2008)\, as well as a Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome (2012).

SUMMARY:FirstWorks Summer Beats Concerts: Khumariyaan
DESCRIPTION:IMPORTANT LOCATION UPDATE ☔ 🌡️ Due to a predicted high heat index and storms\, Friday’s concert will be moved INDOORS to the Roger Williams Park Casino\, which is located on the hill above the Bandstand\, near the carousel. Come enjoy a comfortable\, indoor evening of hard-driving\, indie folk-fusion from Pakistan with Khumariyaan! Food and picnic blankets are allowed and dancing encouraged! Chairs will be available. \nOn tour as part of Center Stage \nTransfixing\, hyper-folk jams with deep Pushtoon roots.\nThe third concert of this year’s Summer Beats global journey transports audiences to the ancient crossroads through the Khyber Pass with an electrifying performance by Pakistan’s Khumariyaan. With its propulsive\, furious sound\, Khumariyaan is celebrated for blending traditional folk music with modern styles. The band’s name translates in Pashto as “the state of musical intoxication\,” which captures the essence of this hyper-folk jam band. Khumariyaan\, “The Intoxicators\,” has reawakened the live music scene in its home city of Peshawar\, Pakistan\, where the group was founded in 2009. It emerged during a tumultuous period marked by Talibanization\, sectarian violence\, military operations\, and neo-imperialist expansions. In such a climate\, art\, including music\, served as a form of resistance. In the intervening decade\, Khumariyaan has expanded its repertory of culturally rooted music. \nThe lute-like Pashto rubab is the meeting point for this transfixing quintet that intertwines the djembe-like zerbaghali (clay or wooden goblet drum)\, sehtar (long-necked lute)\, and searching vocals underpinned with driving acoustic guitars. Khumariyaan’s rolling pulse and richly layered sound builds to frenzied intensity. It is an addictive and accessible pleasure that has ushered in a new era for an eclipsed music. \nThis concert coincides with Food Truck Friday\, an outdoor food truck festival at the Carousel Village starting at 5:00 p.m. We invite you to bring a lawn chair or picnic blanket\, grab some delicious food – and enjoy an evening of incredible music and community! \nAccessibility info:\n• Ramp to accessible entrance along right side of building\n• For questions about accessibility\, contact Rainy Stanford-Cordaro

Named best event in Rhode Island by RI Monthly!\nThis Month’s Theme: Elephant in the Room\nSome things are too big to ignore\, and yet we try. This month\, we’re tackling the Elephant in the Room—shining a light on the hidden\, the uncomfortable\, and the unavoidable. Join us to explore what happens when we name it\, claim it\, and confront it head-on. \n\nWhat issues do our communities need to confront but haven’t yet?\nHow can art bring attention to the unspoken or overlooked?\nWhat truths have you embraced that set you free?\n\nDoors open at 7:20pm and presentations kick off at 8:20pm. \nWhat is PechaKucha?\nIf you haven’t heard of this global yet unpronounceable phenomenon\, PechaKucha is a monthly format for sharing ideas in which presenters are allotted 20 slides and 20 seconds per slide. Simply put: it’s 6 minutes and 40 seconds of show and tell for grown-ups. It began in Tokyo in 2003\, has since spread to over 1\,200 cities worldwide\, and first landed in Providence in March of 2009. To the best of our knowledge\, Providence is the only chapter in the entire world that hosts a PechaKucha Night every month of the year.

Led by dhol player Sunny Jain\, Red Baraat has transformed the festive spirit of the Hindu holiday of Holi into a year-round tour of communal revelry that brings together what NPR has called “the best party band in years\,” a montage of classic Bollywood visuals\, and joyful dancing. \nAt the core of Festival of Colors is Red Baraat’s singular sound: a merging of hard driving North Indian bhangra music with elements of hip hop\, jazz\, and raw punk energy. Created with no less a purposeful agenda than manifesting joy and unity in all people\, the band’s spirit is worn brightly on its sweaty and hard-worked sleeve. \nTraditionally\, Holi is marked by public gatherings of families and strangers sharing songs\, dance\, and the exchange of “colors” – colorful powders playfully thrown amongst crowds of revelers. The holiday signifies the victory of good over evil\, the arrival of spring\, and for many\, a festive day to meet\, play and laugh\, forget and forgive\, and repair ruptured relationships. \nIn this spirit\, we invite you to wear your brightest colors\, bring your joy\, and come together for this special FirstWorks Global Journey at a time when the world needs it most! \n“If we can unite people of all backgrounds and ethnicities to partake in the exuberance of life through the universal language of music\, then life is that much sweeter.” -Sunny Jain\, bandleader\, Red Baraat \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO:\nWhile we won’t be throwing colored powders inside the venue\, our celebratory sharing of colors will include colorful dress\, kaleidoscopic visuals\, and complimentary glowsticks for our audience members. \n\nDoors open at 6:00 PM. Performance run time is 7:30-9:00 PM.\nPlan for extra time at entry for security check.\nSee the thestrandri.com for venue FAQs.\nOur friends from Extraordinary Rendition Band will play a strolling performance outside the venue at 6:30 PM\, then we all head inside for another short set before the main event!\nShow your ticket confirmation email at CHOP (Culinary Hub of Providence) for 20% off dinner* during show week! *Valid 3/31-4/5. Offer excludes alcohol purchases.\nA Red Baraat-inspired drink special\, “Bhangra on the Beach” will be available for purchase at The Strand bar – $14 cash or card\nThe band will have a merch table in the lobby

SUMMARY:An Evening with Aretha Aoki and Ryan MacDonald
DESCRIPTION:Join Aretha Aoki and Ryan MacDonald for an evening of experimental performance and behind-the-scenes conversation about their lives as professional artists who blend dance\, music\, and theater. Together with their daughter\, Frankie Mayfield\, they will share segments of their new show\, IzumonookunI. \nIzumonookunI is a multidisciplinary and multigenerational dance inspired by Izumo no Okuni\, 17th century founder of the Japanese dance-drama form\, kabuki—a form that currently contains little trace of its female-centric\, grassroots\, counter-cultural origins. Choreographer Aretha Aoki and sound and visual designer Ryan MacDonald are re-imagining Okuni in conversation with post-punk/glam-goth/dark-wave within a hybrid\, contemporary landscape of live synthesizer\, digital design\, dance\, and taiko drumming. IzumonookunI premiered at the Bates Dance Festival in July 2024. \nARTIST BIOS\nAretha Aoki is a choreographer\, performer\, and educator. Her work in collaboration with Ryan MacDonald has been performed nationally and internationally\, with funding from the NPN Creation and Development funds\, the Kindling Fund\, Maine Arts Commission\, New England Foundation for the Arts\, and the Northampton Council for the Arts. She has performed and toured in the work of many award-winning choreographers\, most recently Heather Kravas. \nRyan Alexander MacDonald is a multimedia artist and author. He was a 2017 Bessie Award Nominee in “Outstanding Composition and Sound Design” for his work in Vanessa Anspaugh’s The End of Men. He is the author of the story collection The Observable Characteristics of Organisms (FC2) and the winner of the 2012 American Short(er) Fiction Award. He works in multiple forms with long-time collaborator and choreographer Aretha Aoki and has designed sound for choreographers such as Vanessa Anspaugh\, Devynn Emory\, Tristan Koepke and Rebecca Steinberg. He lives in Maine where he teaches sound design and digital art. www.ryanamacdonald.com

SUMMARY:Jake Blount + Mali Obomsawin
DESCRIPTION:Jake Blount and Mali Obomsawin are award-winning musicians who have joined forces on their Smithsonian Folkways release\, symbiont (2024). Blount (pronounced “blunt”) is a renowned interpreter of Black folk music who is recognized for his skill as a string band musician and for his unprecedented Afrofuturist work in sound archives and song collections. In his hands\, the banjo\, fiddle\, electric guitar\, and synthesizer become ceremonial objects used to channel the insurgent creativity of his forebears. Obomsawin (Odanak First Nation) is a celebrated composer\, bassist\, and vocalist in free jazz and experimental music. Obomsawin’s work as a composer and bandleader centers on the imprint of Indigenous music traditions in jazz and “American” genres\, using historical\, archival\, and community research as a spine for improvisation. \nOn symbiont\, Obomsawin’s and Blount’s “genrequeer” approach to their respective traditions has earned a place in some of the very same archives from which they extract their repertoire. In defiance of genre categories\, revisionist histories\, and linear time\, Blount and Obomsawin have fashioned an Indigenous and Afrofuturist folklore that disintegrates the boundaries between acoustic and electric\, artist and medium\, and ancestor and progeny.

SUMMARY:FirstWorks Summer Beats Bonus Concert: Swanky Kitchen Band
DESCRIPTION:Come dance with us during Food Truck Friday! \nSwanky Kitchen Band is on an essential quest to revive the traditional music of the Cayman Islands. Set amidst the crystal blue waters of the Caribbean Sea\, the three tiny islands are home to Kitchen Dance Music\, an infectiously danceable fiddle-driven style. The Kitchen Dance sound\, created through a crossroads of European and African influences\, nearly disappeared save for the efforts of Swanky Kitchen Band\, the last of the Caymanian Kitchen Bands. Led by fiddler/songwriter Samuel Rose\, the 10-piece group is named after a popular local beverage- “swanky.” With instruments including a grater (commonly used in traditional kitchens for hand-processing coconut or cassava)\, guitars\, harmonica\, a rock-solid rhythm section and vocalists telling stories of the old and new Cayman\, Swanky Kitchen Band\, beloved in their home islands\, moves audiences anywhere they go. \nBring a lawn chair or picnic blanket – bring a friend! \nAccessibility info: \n\nWheelchair accessible sidewalk leading to a grass lawn\nAccessible bathrooms nearby (at the Roger Williams Park Carousel)\nEarplugs available\nFor questions about accessibility\, contact Rainy Stanford

SUMMARY:FirstWorks Summer Beats Concerts: QUITAPENAS
DESCRIPTION:QUITAPENAS\, one word – all caps\, four syllables – all claps\, gives you a taste of their rhythmic contagion. This tropical Afro-Latin combo was born under the warm California sun. They borrow aesthetics from the radical 60s\, 70s and 80s. Each song echoes a remix of history and invites one to engage in the liberating evenings of Angola\, Peru\, Colombia\, Brazil and beyond. The name means “to remove worries.” Everybody has a “pena” and the mission of QUITAPENAS is simple: to make you dance and leave you without a worry. \nQUITAPENAS was founded in 2011. The band was formed around their shared love of dance rhythms from the Tropical Afro Latin diaspora. They assembled a group of like-minded friends to share the vision that went on to be QUITAPENAS. The group is made up of first-generation sons of immigrant parents from Guatemala and Mexico. \nCome early for pre-show workshops:\n3:30-4:30 PM: Capoiera/Maculele with Grupo Ondas **moved to the air-conditioned Casino❄️ just up the hill from the Bandstand**\n4:30-5:30 PM: Cumbia music workshop with QUITAPENAS **at the Bandstand**\nOur event will emceed by Lydia Perez\, founder and artistic director of the Puerto Rican Institute of Arts and Advocacy\, Inc. \nIn the event of rain or disruptive weather\, the events will be moved indoors to the Roger Williams Park Casino\, located on the hill above the Bandstand – stay tuned to our social media for any announcements. \nAccessibility info: \n\nWheelchair accessible\nAccessible bathrooms nearby (at the Roger Williams Park Casino)\nChairs available (first-come\, first-served)\nEarplugs available\nFor questions about accessibility\, contact Rainy Stanford
