SUMMARY:This Is America
DESCRIPTION:Curated by violinist Johnny Gandelsman\, “This is America” is a new commissioning and recording project featuring over 20 works for solo violin written by American and US-based composers. \nThe invited composers – including icons like Rhiannon Giddens and Conrad Tao – were asked to reflect on the events of the past year and to consider the impact the period has had on their lives and on their communities. \nA long-time FirstWorks collaborator\, Johnny Gandelsman is a co-founder of Brooklyn Rider and a member of the Silk Road Ensemble. The New Yorker has called him “revelatory” in concert\, placing him in the company of “radically transformative” performers like Maurizio Pollini\, Peter Serkin and Christian Zacharias. \nFor this special FirstWorks program\, Gandelsman will perform selections from “This is America\,” and Providence’s Community MusicWorks will join him for a performance of Bach’s “Brandenburg Concerto.” \nThe concert will open with the premiere of “Woodland Impressions\,” a program developed with EmmaLee Holmes-Hicks through FirstWorks’ inaugural commission initiative. Experience the new suite for erhu (two-stringed Chinese fiddle)\, violin and marimba composed by erhu virtuoso Jing Wang\, performing with violinist EmmaLee Holmes-Hicks and percussionist Piero Guimaraes. “Woodland Impressions” is inspired by FirstWorks themes of Raise Your Voice (celebrating diversity) and Earth First (addressing environmental justice).

SUMMARY:The Seeing: Daniel Bernard Roumain
DESCRIPTION:Produced through a creative partnership between FirstWorks and WaterFire Providence\, “The Seeing” is an exhibition featuring six film works scored by renowned composer\, violinist and activist Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR). \nRoumain will be present to greet attendees during “The Seeing” exhibition’s opening reception taking place on Thursday\, January 20\, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. He will lead a half-hour Town Hall conversation which will be livestreamed on FirstWorks’ Facebook page from 7:30-8:00 p.m. Watch the Livestream here \nDANIEL BERNARD ROUMAIN\nARTIST STATEMENT\nThe Seeing is a collection of films that are all related to our willingness to hear\, understand\, and love one another. Can we see each other? Of course\, for so many\, division and hatred is what is heard and understood\, and hatred fills our screens and airwaves as it surrounds and drowns our communities into a chasm of despair. We are a country bound and divided by race\, and these films take a clear-eyed view of race in America and how it unfolds for so many BIPOC people worldwide. The titles of these films reveal the intention of my work with an array of talented and brilliant film makers\, from Yoram Savion to Dana Greenfield to Carlos Toro and others\, all in deep collaboration. As a Black man in America\, I am well aware of the trope of the being caught\, in a frame\, in a lethal pas de deux with law enforcement\, hoping and praying to live. \nThere have been times when I have been afraid and feared for my life. These films speak to fear\, but just as boldly\, they speak to all of us seeking truth\, justice\, and a better American way—aren’t we better than this? \nThe Seeing includes the following works:\nTHEY STILL WANT TO KILL US\nComposed and performed by Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR); Mezzo-soprano: J’Nai Bridges; Directed and edited by Yoram Savion; Director of photography: Sam Wolff; Produced by Sozo. \nI HAVE NOTHING TO DO EXCEPT LOVE \nComposed by Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR); Libretto\, vocals\, and piano by Minna Choi; Directed\, edited\, and libretto by Dana Greenfield; with words from Simone Roumain; Cinematography by Sam Wolff; Dance and choreography by Sarah Bolander; Project management by Sozo Artists. Commissioned\, developed\, and produced by PROTOTYPE: Opera | Theatre | Now. \nABOUT FACE \nSpoken word poetry by Marc Bamuthi Joseph; Score by Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR); Performed and choreographed by Drew Dollaz; Directed\, filmed and edited by Yoram Savion; Produced by Rika Iino and Melissa Higgins | Sozo. \nFEAR \nDirected by Yoram Savion; Spoken word poetry by Marc Bamuthi Joseph; Score by Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR); Director of photography: Gabrielle Blackwood; Produced by Rika Iino\, Melissa Higgins and Yoram Savion | Sozo. \nREQUIEM\, FOR THE LIVING\, IN COLOR \nScore by Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR); Film by Steer (Steerforward.com); Produced by FirstWorks\, premiered at PVDFest 2020. \nOUR COUNTRY \nScore by Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR); Performed and Choreographed by Drew Dollaz; Film by Steer (Steerforward.com); Cinematography by Sam Wolff; Produced by FirstWorks. \nThe exhibition will be open to the public during the Center’s regular business hours: Wednesday through Sunday\, 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. and Thursday evenings until 9:00 p.m.

SUMMARY:Video release: Natále - Moreno feat. Fidel Nadal
DESCRIPTION:Natále is a genre-defying singer-songwriter whose homes include Philadelphia\, Tel Aviv\, and New England. Her music is an eclectic mix of soul\, folk-rock\, and Middle Eastern vibes. Inspired by the musical revolutions of the 1960s & ‘70s\, Natále’s music is a direct channel to finding solace in inner solitude. \nHer latest music video “Moreno” premieres on March 15\, 2022 on the cusp of spring. Filmed in the open markets\, beaches\, and streets of Mexico\, the video shares sunshine\, warmth\, and uplifting vibes\, encouraging people from all cultures to dance in unison to the celebration of life! \n“Moreno” features Afro-Argentinian reggae musician Fidel Nadal\, “The Rasta who revolutionized Latin Rock” (Rolling Stone Magazine). The world-reggae inspired song emits the experience of a spirited\, multicultural love affair\, drawing influences from cumbia and flamenco. \n“Conceptually\, the goal was to keep it simple\, by documenting the experiences and the energy shared between locals. In many places in Latin America\, especially in Mexico\, music and dancing are inherently part of the circadian. Music is food for the spirit\, and I wanted to capture the basic essence of simply enjoying life’s natural rhythm.” – Natále \n \n“Moreno” was recorded at Grammy-award winner Camilo Lara’s Soy Sauce Studios in Mexico City. The song was performed by a cast of native Mexican musicians: Alex Gonzalez\, Salvador Hernandez Mucel\, Moises Tlaxcaltecatl Hernandez\, Raymundo Tlaxcaltecatl Hernandez Bateria\, Marco Tulio Tlaxcaltecatl\, and Alex González Villaseñior; and was mixed/engineered by Diego Aguirre Cruzaley. \n

SUMMARY:Professional Development: Climate Change and Music-Making
DESCRIPTION:IMPACTS ON CREATING ART AND COMMUNITY BUILDING \nRenowned Rhode Island-based musician Sidy Maiga’s expertise lies in traditional and contemporary Malian and West African music. Sidy is highly skilled in djembe and dundun\, two percussion instruments whose importance goes beyond rhythm\, style\, and musical skill. These instruments and their construction require cultural knowledge that signifies the importance of the environment and a community that helps meet each other’s needs. In this presentation\, Sidy describes these instruments’ history and cultural significance within West African societies as they relate to community building\, the environment\, and how we impact those around us.  \nIn doing so\, Sidy opens up to broader questions regarding how climate change affects cultural production\, including the resources\, relationships\, and communities that may surround an art form. This discussion becomes an exploration into how climate change impacts music-making and other forms of art. The goal is to inspire educators to envision how the arts can integrate into lesson plans to help understand the socio-cultural impacts of climate change and how communities respond. \nAdditionally\, Sidy and Jamil Jorge\, FirstWorks’ Education Director\, will share the resources available in FirstWorks’ Virtual Learning Series\, including performances and talks\, that teachers can use with their students to expand upon the ideas shared during the session. \nEarns one PLU credit.

SUMMARY:Rebirth Brass Band
DESCRIPTION:A New Orleans Institution Since 1983\n\n\n\n\nFor almost 4 decades\, the Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band has been stunning fans with a fiery live show and a rich musical catalog. Their trademark sound pays homage to the New Orleans brass band tradition while weaving a tapestry that combines elements of jazz\, funk\, soul\, R&B and the sounds from the streets they grew up on. From their legendary 25+ year run of Tuesday nights at the Maple Leaf to stages all over the world\, Rebirth is the soundtrack of the Crescent City and her premier musical ambassador. \nFounded by brothers Phil and Keith Frazier in 1983\, Rebirth began their career playing on the sidewalks of the French Quarter\, and quickly landed gigs at second-line parades. Those auspicious beginnings have led to thousands of shows to music aficionados everywhere\, including heads of state and royalty. \nThe band’s unique “soundtrack of New Orleans” has also garnered admiration from artists of all genres. They’ve shared the stage and collaborated with everyone from the Grateful Dead to the Red Hot Chili Peppers\, Maceo Parker\, Green Day\, U2\, James Brown\, 311\, G-Love\, MuteMath\, Juvenile\, Train\, Big Freedia\, Ani Difranco\, Galactic\, Allen Touisant\, Neville Brothers\, Quincy Jones and Trombone Shorty. \n“just saw THE REBIRTH BRASS BAND\, unbelievable. hard as hell\, free as a ray of light\, there is not a band on earth that is better. stunning.” – Flea\, Red Hot Chili Peppers \n“Commingling parade-band protocols with the more ragged aspects of jazz and funk — “junk music” is Mr. Frazier’s term for the crossbred result — the group chases down euphoria one boisterous groove at a time.” – New York Times

SUMMARY:Golpea a La Rosa

SUMMARY:Hit La Rosa
DESCRIPTION:On tour as part of Center Stage\nCenterStageUS.org \nAt play in a Psychedelic Cumbia Sandbox\, Hit La Rosa Channels a Fantastic Reflection of Perú’s Full Cultural Spectrum \nOne of Lima’s leading indie bands\, Hit La Rosa delivers tight sets of pulsing tropical beats\, rolling surf sounds\, and sly lyrics to heal what ails you. At the center is Cumbia\, the sound and beat of a collision of various cultures\, and the heartbeat of contemporary Peruvian music. \nBy turns precise and dreamy\, Hit La Rosa plumbs cumbia and pop music\, folklore\, jazz\, and dancehall\, to produce its distinctive grooves and hooks. Add to this a punk sensibility designed to\, as lead singer and primary lyricist Chaska Paucar puts it\, “bring healing to people\,” by exploring\, not shunning\, life’s shadowy sides. \n“Hit La Rosa comes in hot and doesn’t stop until the final measure. The band explores many facets of Peruvian cumbia music\, infusing it with pop\, folklore\, jazz\, and dancehall to produce its distinctive grooves and hooks. The band’s precise-yet-dreamlike music and punk sensibility all come together to make music that explores life’s shadowy sides.”\n– Bob Boilen NPR Music

SUMMARY:FirstWorks Summer Beats Concerts: DakhaBrakha
DESCRIPTION:VENUE CHANGE ALERT: Due to an air-conditioning system malfunction in the main theatre at The Columbus Theatre\, this performance has been moved to The Strand Ballroom and Theatre at 79 Washington Street in Downtown Providence. \n\n DakhaBrakha is touring tirelessly and playing concerts throughout the world to support Ukraine. The group encourages your donations to Razom (which means “Together” in Ukrainian)\, a nonprofit dedicated to providing relief efforts in Ukraine. You can support those relief efforts here at Razom’s donation page.\n“From the first moment the group starts performing\, it’s hard not to get caught up in the magic it weaves. … utter brilliance.”\n-NPR’s Bob Boilen \nA sonic feast as well as a visual spectacle\, Kyiv’s DakhaBrakha weaves ancient Ukrainian folk melodies into a subversive musical tapestry that embraces indie rock\, pop\, hip hop\, the avant-garde\, and traditional instrumentation from around the world. With a name (ДахаБраха) that translates as “give/take” in old Ukrainian\, the quartet began over a decade ago as the musical component of avant-garde stage performances at the DAKH Theater in Kyiv\, cementing the group’s arresting visual image and signature theatrics. \nDahkaBrakha has honed a haunting musical approach based around unearthly vocal harmonies and thunderous percussion\, augmented by floating cello and accordion sonorities. Heralded by Rolling Stone as the “Best Breakout” performers at 2014’s Bonnaroo festival\, the band calls their music “ethno-chaos\,” a moniker that perfectly describes their fearless appropriation of African\, Asian\, Arabic and Western influences in the creation of their singular sound. With the current war and humanitarian catastrophe in Ukraine\, DakhaBrakha has taken on the mission of cultural ambassador\, celebrating national pride in uncertain times through the limitless power of music. \nJoin us in welcoming the group back for their first Providence performance since PVDFest 2019! \n\n DAKHABRAKHA ARE: \nMARKO HALANEVYCH Vocals\, darbuka\, tabla\, didjeridoo\, accordion\, trombone. \nIRYNA KOVALENKO Vocals\, djembe\, bass drums\, accordion\, percussion\, bugay\, zgaleyka\, piano. \nOLENA TSYBULSKA Vocals\, bass drums\, percussion\, garmoshka. \nNINA GARENETSKA Vocals\, cello\, bass drum. \nVLADYSLAV TROITSKYI Director\, ideologist and founder of DakhaBrakha band \nVisit the DakhaBrakha website to learn more.

\n\n¹ https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/what-is-neurodiversity-202111232645#:~:text=La neurodiversidad20describe20la20idea20que20no20se20considera20como20deficiencias \n

SUMMARY:Professional Development: Arts Integration Techniques for Neurodiverse Learners
DESCRIPTION:FirstWorks presents a Professional Learning opportunity for teachers to explore how to integrate the arts as a form of accommodation for neurodiverse learners in classroom settings.  \nNeurodiversity “describes the idea that people experience and interact with the world around them in many different ways; there is no one “right way of thinking\, learning\, and behaving\, and differences are not viewed as deficits.”¹ \nThis opportunity is part of FirstWorks’ Raise Your Voice initiative to celebrate differences. Our goal is to inspire teachers to use the arts as a tool of expression to help neurodiverse students use their voices. This workshop focuses on arts-integration techniques including accommodations and best practices for designing classroom lessons. Teachers will learn from and work with local educators and neurodiverse artists to:  \n\nDescribe neurodiversity and the different types of learners in any given classroom. \nLearn from neurodiverse artists about how their relationship with art\, barriers vs. accessible accommodations to integrated-arts experiences\, and how they use art in various situations. \nAnalyze hypothetical classroom situations and brainstorm how to not only insert the arts to enhance curriculum content\, but also develop differentiated accommodations to make learning more accessible and informed by various students’ needs. \n\nAdditionally\, we will share a resource list from which teachers can continue to learn ways to support neurodiverse students better\, which will\, in turn\, enhance learning experiences for all students. \nThis VSA program is provided in 2021-2022 under a contract with the John F.
