SUMMARY:FirstWorks Summer Beats Concerts: DakhaBrakha
DESCRIPTION:VENUE CHANGE ALERT: Due to an air-conditioning system malfunction in the main theatre at The Columbus Theatre\, this performance has been moved to The Strand Ballroom and Theatre at 79 Washington Street in Downtown Providence. \n\n DakhaBrakha is touring tirelessly and playing concerts throughout the world to support Ukraine. The group encourages your donations to Razom (which means “Together” in Ukrainian)\, a nonprofit dedicated to providing relief efforts in Ukraine. You can support those relief efforts here at Razom’s donation page.\n“From the first moment the group starts performing\, it’s hard not to get caught up in the magic it weaves. … utter brilliance.”\n-NPR’s Bob Boilen \nA sonic feast as well as a visual spectacle\, Kyiv’s DakhaBrakha weaves ancient Ukrainian folk melodies into a subversive musical tapestry that embraces indie rock\, pop\, hip hop\, the avant-garde\, and traditional instrumentation from around the world. With a name (ДахаБраха) that translates as “give/take” in old Ukrainian\, the quartet began over a decade ago as the musical component of avant-garde stage performances at the DAKH Theater in Kyiv\, cementing the group’s arresting visual image and signature theatrics. \nDahkaBrakha has honed a haunting musical approach based around unearthly vocal harmonies and thunderous percussion\, augmented by floating cello and accordion sonorities. Heralded by Rolling Stone as the “Best Breakout” performers at 2014’s Bonnaroo festival\, the band calls their music “ethno-chaos\,” a moniker that perfectly describes their fearless appropriation of African\, Asian\, Arabic and Western influences in the creation of their singular sound. With the current war and humanitarian catastrophe in Ukraine\, DakhaBrakha has taken on the mission of cultural ambassador\, celebrating national pride in uncertain times through the limitless power of music. \nJoin us in welcoming the group back for their first Providence performance since PVDFest 2019! \n\n DAKHABRAKHA ARE: \nMARKO HALANEVYCH Vocals\, darbuka\, tabla\, didjeridoo\, accordion\, trombone. \nIRYNA KOVALENKO Vocals\, djembe\, bass drums\, accordion\, percussion\, bugay\, zgaleyka\, piano. \nOLENA TSYBULSKA Vocals\, bass drums\, percussion\, garmoshka. \nNINA GARENETSKA Vocals\, cello\, bass drum. \nVLADYSLAV TROITSKYI Director\, ideologist and founder of DakhaBrakha band \nVisit the DakhaBrakha website to learn more.

\n\n¹ https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/what-is-neurodiversity-202111232645#:~:text=La neurodiversidad20describe20la20idea20que20no20se20considera20como20deficiencias \n

SUMMARY:Professional Development: Arts Integration Techniques for Neurodiverse Learners
DESCRIPTION:FirstWorks presents a Professional Learning opportunity for teachers to explore how to integrate the arts as a form of accommodation for neurodiverse learners in classroom settings.  \nNeurodiversity “describes the idea that people experience and interact with the world around them in many different ways; there is no one “right way of thinking\, learning\, and behaving\, and differences are not viewed as deficits.”¹ \nThis opportunity is part of FirstWorks’ Raise Your Voice initiative to celebrate differences. Our goal is to inspire teachers to use the arts as a tool of expression to help neurodiverse students use their voices. This workshop focuses on arts-integration techniques including accommodations and best practices for designing classroom lessons. Teachers will learn from and work with local educators and neurodiverse artists to:  \n\nDescribe neurodiversity and the different types of learners in any given classroom. \nLearn from neurodiverse artists about how their relationship with art\, barriers vs. accessible accommodations to integrated-arts experiences\, and how they use art in various situations. \nAnalyze hypothetical classroom situations and brainstorm how to not only insert the arts to enhance curriculum content\, but also develop differentiated accommodations to make learning more accessible and informed by various students’ needs. \n\nAdditionally\, we will share a resource list from which teachers can continue to learn ways to support neurodiverse students better\, which will\, in turn\, enhance learning experiences for all students. \nThis VSA program is provided in 2021-2022 under a contract with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. \n  \nLocation: \nThis hybrid event will take place in-person for Meeting Street faculty and staff only. SUMMARY:The Telling: Daniel Bernard Roumain
DESCRIPTION:“The Telling” is a new collection of original live works by renowned Haitian-American composer\, violinist\,  and activist Daniel Bernard Roumain. Through instrumental solos\, dance\, and chamber music\, the artists reflect upon and respond to the forces of crisis and communion in our lives\, telling stories of our anger\, anguish\, and enduring hope. Surrounded by singers\, dancers\, and strings at Providence’s majestic WaterFire Arts Center\, how can we\, the living\, honor the lost? \n“Twin Stars: Diamond Variations for Dae’Anna” is the centerpiece of the evening program. Castile was fatally shot by a police officer in 2016 during a traffic stop while driving with his girlfriend\, Diamond Reynolds\, and her four-year-old daughter\, Dae’Anna. View the online program here. \nFeatured artists: Becky Bass\, Shura Baryshnikov\, Melvin Chen\, MusicWorks Collective\, Daniel Bernard Roumain\, Albert Rudolph Lee\, Jay Breen and Victoria L. SUMMARY:Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company: What Problem?
DESCRIPTION:Co-presented by FirstWorks and Brown Arts Institute at Brown University \n“For him\, dance is theatre\, not just movement.”\n— The Guardian \nFor almost four decades\, the groundbreaking Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company has revolutionized modern dance while exploring issues of identity. The company’s work “What Problem?” evokes the tension between belonging to a community and feelings of isolation that many feel in these divisive political times. Two-time Tony Award winner Bill T. Jones pursues the elusive “we” in this highly personal work\, performing alongside his 10-member company\, four vocalists and a cast of over 20 local community members. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech and Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick” serve as the basis for the spoken text Jones delivers. Through dance\, spoken word and deep community collaboration\, Jones reflects on King’s immortal words\, “we shall overcome\,” mixed with the scripture of our democracy as formed and shaped by WE THE PEOPLE. \nRecommended for ages 12 and up. Run time: 85 minutes.

SUMMARY:Daniel Bernard Roumain | Twin Stars: Diamond Variations for Dae'Anna
DESCRIPTION:Daniel Bernard Roumain\, composer | Marc Bamuthi Joseph\, libretto \n“‘Twin Stars’ is a piece that was created out of love and a thirst for Black dignity — and the hope and optimism that every child\, every human deserves.”  —Marc Bamuthi Joseph\, poet and librettist [LISTEN TO ARTIST STATEMENT HERE] \n\nFilmed at WaterFire Arts Center on September 29\, 2022. Run time: 31 minutes. \nLibretto by Marc Bamuthi Joseph\nComposed by Daniel Bernard Roumain \nDirection by Dana Greenfield \nLighting Design by David Shocket \nCollaborators:\nMelvin Chen\, Piano\nBecky Bass\, Mezzo-Soprano\nAlbert Rudolph Lee\, Tenor\nMusicWorks Collective String Quartet: \nSarah Kim\, Violin\nKimberly Fang\, Violin\nSebastian Ruth\, Viola\nKamyron Williams\, Cello\nChoreography by: \nShura Baryshnikov\, Dancer\nVictoria L. Awkward\, Dancer\nJay Breen\, Dancer \nVideo by Steer  \nThe future is built on how we remember. In Twin Stars\, Daniel Bernard Roumain and Marc Bamuthi Joseph honor the memory of Philando Castile\, murdered in 2016 during a police traffic stop while his four-year-old daughter\, Dae’Anna and her mother\, Diamond Reynolds bore witness in the back seat of the car. The epidemic of violence against Black bodies sparked the path for the artists’ music and activism\, and converged with local collaborators in Providence\, Rhode Island as the opening performance for FirstWorks’ 2022 season.  \nWith “Twin Stars\,” the artists have created a sanctuary on both live and virtual stages. I thank them — and their collaborators\, for this painful\, beautiful work of art that bears witness to Black trauma and brings us together to move forward. FirstWorks honors this work and is fiercely committed to our role in the arts ecosphere that brings artists and community together. \nThis chamber work\, performed by string quartet\, piano\, two vocalists and dancers\, challenges us to ask: How are we going to do the work? How are we going to join together against the persistence of anti-Black racism in the United States? It asks us to remember that beauty and joy can also be forms of resistance and proclamation. \nDaniel is using music\, classical music at that\, as an instrument of change. We must rise to this moment. The voices of artists beckon us forward to a kinder future.  \nKathleen Pletcher\nExecutive Artistic Director & Founder\, FirstWorks \nRead about FirstWorks’ commitment to equity and inclusion.\nWe look forward to continuing this work\, both internally and in the community.

SUMMARY:FirstWorks Summer Beats Concerts: The Garifuna Collective
DESCRIPTION:Powerful Afro-Indigenous Music from Belize & Honduras \nDue to international passport issues for Belize-based Garifuna Collective\, their FirstWorks Summer Beats concert has been moved to a new date and time:  Wednesday\, July 19\, 6 PM at Roger Williams Park Bandstand.  \n“This troupe of extraordinary singers has fashioned a unique and wonderful world; once you enter\, you will never want to leave.”\n—The Guardian (UK) \nThis multi-generational music ensemble is the living embodiment of a unique Afro-Caribbean heritage. As representatives of the Garifuna people\, a distinct language and cultural diaspora spanning the Central American coastline\, these musicians harness the indomitable energy of their African and Indigenous ancestors. Their irrepressible\, positive energy inspires a joyful celebration at each performance. \nThe Garifuna Collective has performed in over 30 countries across five continents and was part of the most celebrated global albums of all time: the critically acclaimed “Wátina\,” recipient of the Womex and BBC World Music Award and voted the Number One World Music Album of All Time by Amazon. \nThe powerful sound of the two traditional Garifuna drums – the Primero and the Segunda – sparks feverish dance floors over a foundation of ancestral beats. Driving maracas\, turtle shells\, guitars and swinging bass grooves blend with powerful call-and-response vocals to tell stories through music\, dance\, and traditional costume. \nMORE INFO\nThe Garifuna people are the descendants of an Afro-Indigenous population from the Caribbean island of St. Vincent who were exiled to the Honduran coast in the eighteenth century and subsequently moved to Belize. SUMMARY:Pneuhaus Inflatable Art Studio
DESCRIPTION:Pneuhaus is an interdisciplinary art and design studio that specializes in ephemeral art installations. Their immersive sculptures guide visitors into the universe of their senses. The design process deeply engages the intrinsic qualities of materials to evolve forms that harmoniously express their physical and dynamic nature. Inspired by physics\, biology\, and craft\, their studio’s work incorporates the lessons of nature in both form and function. \n“Grove” is an immersive sculpture that stands as a monument to the invisible forces that shape the world around us. Inspired by the subterranean root systems that connect our forests\, twenty-three columns of light are channeled into a single branching network and vaulted high into the sky\, creating pockets and clearings for people to explore. Held up by only air and fabric\, lights gently pulse through the form\, distributing colors and entwining visitors throughout its roots. \n“The Street Seats” are a group of interactive seating units designed to bring color and play to any area. Each Seat is a simple geometric shape made from one line that turns\, twists\, and falls over itself. In this way the Seats multifunction as striking sculptural centerpieces\, experiential furniture\, and movable play objects.
