SUMMARY:Daniel Bernard Roumain | Twin Stars: Diamond Variations for Dae'Anna
DESCRIPTION:Daniel Bernard Roumain\, composer | Marc Bamuthi Joseph\, libretto \n“‘Twin Stars’ is a piece that was created out of love and a thirst for Black dignity — and the hope and optimism that every child\, every human deserves.”  —Marc Bamuthi Joseph\, poet and librettist [LISTEN TO ARTIST STATEMENT HERE] \n\nFilmed at WaterFire Arts Center on September 29\, 2022. Run time: 31 minutes. \nLibretto by Marc Bamuthi Joseph\nComposed by Daniel Bernard Roumain \nDirection by Dana Greenfield \nLighting Design by David Shocket \nCollaborators:\nMelvin Chen\, Piano\nBecky Bass\, Mezzo-Soprano\nAlbert Rudolph Lee\, Tenor\nMusicWorks Collective String Quartet: \nSarah Kim\, Violin\nKimberly Fang\, Violin\nSebastian Ruth\, Viola\nKamyron Williams\, Cello\nChoreography by: \nShura Baryshnikov\, Dancer\nVictoria L. Awkward\, Dancer\nJay Breen\, Dancer \nVideo by Steer  \nThe future is built on how we remember. In Twin Stars\, Daniel Bernard Roumain and Marc Bamuthi Joseph honor the memory of Philando Castile\, murdered in 2016 during a police traffic stop while his four-year-old daughter\, Dae’Anna and her mother\, Diamond Reynolds bore witness in the back seat of the car. The epidemic of violence against Black bodies sparked the path for the artists’ music and activism\, and converged with local collaborators in Providence\, Rhode Island as the opening performance for FirstWorks’ 2022 season.  \nWith “Twin Stars\,” the artists have created a sanctuary on both live and virtual stages. I thank them — and their collaborators\, for this painful\, beautiful work of art that bears witness to Black trauma and brings us together to move forward. FirstWorks honors this work and is fiercely committed to our role in the arts ecosphere that brings artists and community together. \nThis chamber work\, performed by string quartet\, piano\, two vocalists and dancers\, challenges us to ask: How are we going to do the work? How are we going to join together against the persistence of anti-Black racism in the United States? It asks us to remember that beauty and joy can also be forms of resistance and proclamation. \nDaniel is using music\, classical music at that\, as an instrument of change. We must rise to this moment. The voices of artists beckon us forward to a kinder future.  \nKathleen Pletcher\nExecutive Artistic Director & Founder\, FirstWorks \nRead about FirstWorks’ commitment to equity and inclusion.\nWe look forward to continuing this work\, both internally and in the community.

SUMMARY:FirstWorks Summer Beats Concerts: The Garifuna Collective
DESCRIPTION:Powerful Afro-Indigenous Music from Belize & Honduras \nDue to international passport issues for Belize-based Garifuna Collective\, their FirstWorks Summer Beats concert has been moved to a new date and time:  Wednesday\, July 19\, 6 PM at Roger Williams Park Bandstand.  \n“This troupe of extraordinary singers has fashioned a unique and wonderful world; once you enter\, you will never want to leave.”\n—The Guardian (UK) \nThis multi-generational music ensemble is the living embodiment of a unique Afro-Caribbean heritage. As representatives of the Garifuna people\, a distinct language and cultural diaspora spanning the Central American coastline\, these musicians harness the indomitable energy of their African and Indigenous ancestors. Their irrepressible\, positive energy inspires a joyful celebration at each performance. \nThe Garifuna Collective has performed in over 30 countries across five continents and was part of the most celebrated global albums of all time: the critically acclaimed “Wátina\,” recipient of the Womex and BBC World Music Award and voted the Number One World Music Album of All Time by Amazon. \nThe powerful sound of the two traditional Garifuna drums – the Primero and the Segunda – sparks feverish dance floors over a foundation of ancestral beats. Driving maracas\, turtle shells\, guitars and swinging bass grooves blend with powerful call-and-response vocals to tell stories through music\, dance\, and traditional costume. \nMORE INFO\nThe Garifuna people are the descendants of an Afro-Indigenous population from the Caribbean island of St. Vincent who were exiled to the Honduran coast in the eighteenth century and subsequently moved to Belize. SUMMARY:Pneuhaus Inflatable Art Studio
DESCRIPTION:Pneuhaus is an interdisciplinary art and design studio that specializes in ephemeral art installations. Their immersive sculptures guide visitors into the universe of their senses. The design process deeply engages the intrinsic qualities of materials to evolve forms that harmoniously express their physical and dynamic nature. Inspired by physics\, biology\, and craft\, their studio’s work incorporates the lessons of nature in both form and function. \n“Grove” is an immersive sculpture that stands as a monument to the invisible forces that shape the world around us. Inspired by the subterranean root systems that connect our forests\, twenty-three columns of light are channeled into a single branching network and vaulted high into the sky\, creating pockets and clearings for people to explore. Held up by only air and fabric\, lights gently pulse through the form\, distributing colors and entwining visitors throughout its roots. \n“The Street Seats” are a group of interactive seating units designed to bring color and play to any area. Each Seat is a simple geometric shape made from one line that turns\, twists\, and falls over itself. In this way the Seats multifunction as striking sculptural centerpieces\, experiential furniture\, and movable play objects.

SUMMARY:Rennie Harris Presents: Rome & Jewels
DESCRIPTION:“The most brilliant hip-hop choreographer in America” (The New Yorker)\, Rennie Harris restages his breakout masterpiece\, Rome & Jewels. A story of love\, fear\, violence and triumph\, Rome & Jewels challenges preconceived notions of Shakespeare with a hip-hop journey through the streets of Philadelphia. The evening-length production was groundbreaking globally\, winning numerous awards as it explored racial\, religious and economic questions through the lens of gang violence. “The Basquiat of the U.S. contemporary dance scene” (The London Times)\, legendary choreographer Harris reinvents a timeless tale to embody the diverse African-Diasporic traditions of the past and to pave the way for innovative storytelling through dance. \nRennie Harris Presents: Rome & Jewels was the 2023 New York Times Critic’s Pick! Read the review here. \nContent Advisory: Rennie Harris Presents: Rome & Jewels contains strong language and is not recommended for young children.\nRun time is 75 minutes\, no intermission. An artist-up close conversation with RHPM company members will take place immediately following the performance.

SUMMARY:FirstWorks Summer Beats Concerts: QUITAPENAS
DESCRIPTION:QUITAPENAS\, one word – all caps\, four syllables – all claps\, gives you a taste of their rhythmic contagion. This tropical Afro-Latin combo was born under the warm California sun. They borrow aesthetics from the radical 60s\, 70s and 80s. Each song echoes a remix of history and invites one to engage in the liberating evenings of Angola\, Peru\, Colombia\, Brazil and beyond. The name means “to remove worries.” Everybody has a “pena” and the mission of QUITAPENAS is simple: to make you dance and leave you without a worry. \nQUITAPENAS was founded in 2011. The band was formed around their shared love of dance rhythms from the Tropical Afro Latin diaspora. They assembled a group of like-minded friends to share the vision that went on to be QUITAPENAS. The group is made up of first-generation sons of immigrant parents from Guatemala and Mexico. \nCome early for pre-show workshops:\n3:30-4:30 PM: Capoiera/Maculele with Grupo Ondas **moved to the air-conditioned Casino❄️ just up the hill from the Bandstand**\n4:30-5:30 PM: Cumbia music workshop with QUITAPENAS **at the Bandstand**\nOur event will emceed by Lydia Perez\, founder and artistic director of the Puerto Rican Institute of Arts and Advocacy\, Inc. \nIn the event of rain or disruptive weather\, the events will be moved indoors to the Roger Williams Park Casino\, located on the hill above the Bandstand – stay tuned to our social media for any announcements. \nAccessibility info: \n\nWheelchair accessible\nAccessible bathrooms nearby (at the Roger Williams Park Casino)\nChairs available (first-come\, first-served)\nEarplugs available\nFor questions about accessibility\, contact Rainy Stanford

SUMMARY:FirstWorks Summer Beats Bonus Concert: Swanky Kitchen Band
DESCRIPTION:Come dance with us during Food Truck Friday! \nSwanky Kitchen Band is on an essential quest to revive the traditional music of the Cayman Islands. Set amidst the crystal blue waters of the Caribbean Sea\, the three tiny islands are home to Kitchen Dance Music\, an infectiously danceable fiddle-driven style. The Kitchen Dance sound\, created through a crossroads of European and African influences\, nearly disappeared save for the efforts of Swanky Kitchen Band\, the last of the Caymanian Kitchen Bands. Led by fiddler/songwriter Samuel Rose\, the 10-piece group is named after a popular local beverage- “swanky.” With instruments including a grater (commonly used in traditional kitchens for hand-processing coconut or cassava)\, guitars\, harmonica\, a rock-solid rhythm section and vocalists telling stories of the old and new Cayman\, Swanky Kitchen Band\, beloved in their home islands\, moves audiences anywhere they go. \nBring a lawn chair or picnic blanket – bring a friend! \nAccessibility info: \n\nWheelchair accessible sidewalk leading to a grass lawn\nAccessible bathrooms nearby (at the Roger Williams Park Carousel)\nEarplugs available\nFor questions about accessibility\, contact Rainy Stanford
