Communications Director

Anticipated Compensation: $50,000 annually

FirstWorks is a Providence, Rhode Island-based non-profit arts organization dedicated to enhancing the cultural, educational, and economic vitality of our community by engaging audiences with world-class performing arts and education programs and is the Founding Partner and Co-Producer of PVDFest, Providence’s signature arts festival. FirstWorks’ public performances, whether with iconic guest artists or world-class local ensembles, are framed with extensive community interaction and provide pathways to opportunities for thousands of low-income students in Rhode Island.

The Communications Director works with the FirstWorks team, including Marketing Manager, and has overall responsibility for FirstWorks marketing strategy, messaging, and execution.  Reporting to the Executive Artistic Director, they will develop, oversee, and guide all communications, website, and public relations messages and collateral to consistently articulate FirstWorks mission and brand. The Communications Director will play a key role in managing external relations in the community. The appropriate candidate will be a leader with the ability to serve as a unifying force and implement communications plans at both the strategic and tactical levels.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate the annual communications plan across all FirstWorks programs, for partners and audiences, in collaboration with the FirstWorks team
  • Develop metrics and evaluation ROI for sales, brand, and engagement goals, in conjunction with the Executive Artistic Director to assure growth of brand awareness
  • Steward community relationships and manage external communications
  • Implement targeted marketing initiatives including traditional print and digital media, to effectively reach specific audiences and needs
  • Perform marketing research, compile and analyze data on competitors and trends, generate regular reports on FirstWorks analytics and strategy effectiveness, take the lead on creating new strategies and relationships to drive revenues
  • Manage the Marketing team, including experienced Marketing Manager and graphic designer
  • Hire and supervise marketing contractors, effectively delegate tasks and oversee execution, clearly communicate expectations and goals, facilitate regular team meetings, and provide regular feedback
  • Supervise media sponsor relationships, and community outreach to affinity organizations and local influencers
  • Support and develop written content and image selection for branded emails, letters, social media posts and campaigns, offline marketing material, website content, ensuring overall messaging and brand uniformity
  • Support and develop collateral resources across the organization with overall brand conformity, including Annual Report
  • Ensure timely updates to the website, in collaboration with FirstWorks’ Marketing Manager
  • Manage Marketing committee, prepare reports, and participate in Board of Directors meetings as needed
  • Represent FirstWorks at events and within the community as needed
  • Manage fiscal tracking of overall Marketing budget
Desired Skills/Experience:
  • Relevant experience in developing marketing and communications strategies
  • Experience working with cultural nonprofits and knowledge of arts marketing best practices preferred
  • Proficient knowledge of social media platforms
  • Relationship builder with the ability to represent the organization in conversations with sponsors, media partners and community leaders
  • Excellent writing/editing and verbal communications skills
  • Excellent organizational abilities with keen attention to detail
  • Track record of overseeing, prioritizing, and executing multiple deadlines
  • Ability to generate enthusiasm for the organization, elicit cooperation, and get information over the phone, via email, and in person.
  • Ability to understand presented projects and craft talking points as needed
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Facile knowledge/user of software applications (i.e., Microsoft 365, Adobe, InDesign, DropBox), familiarity with SalesForce/Patron Manager, and Asana a plus

Summer Arts Counselor

Anticipated Compensation: $18/hour

Job Time Frame:

  • Mon—Thu, June 20-30, 9:30 am – 1:30 pm (2 weeks of Orientation, Training, and Planning)
  • Mon—Thu, July 5– Aug 4, 8:15 am – 4:15 pm (5 weeks of Camp)
  • Mon—Tue, Aug 8-9. 9:30 am – 1:30 pm (2 days of wrap up: Evaluation and Feedback)

This is a fixed term contract.

FirstWorks is looking for individuals with a passion for arts education.  We are looking for camp counselors for 8 weeks this summer that will work at FirstWorks office in Providence and the Jenks/JMW Complex for the Performing and Visual Arts Media Center, 350 Division Street, Pawtucket, RI.

Summer Arts Counselor will help to plan, facilitate, and evaluate an in-person Summer Arts Camp enrichment program administered by FirstWorks for the Pawtucket School District. The camp connects students with professional artists to explore creative practices and careers. Camp features daily activities lead by experienced artists and camp counselors (10:1 ratio) who will teach team building, and creative and expressive skills using music, theater, dance, and visual art. Counselors will facilitate student excursions to artistic and cultural venues throughout Rhode Island for workshops with creative practitioners in the community, including Open Farms (Cumberland), Tomaquag Museum (Exeter), and the Steel Yard (Providence). Students will create art to showcase on the camp’s last day while reflecting on and connecting different artistic styles, social and cultural learning, and expressive practices.

The Summer Arts Counselor is responsible for:
  • Participate in training workshops held prior to the camp sessions.
  • Oversee groups of ten or more middle school aged students.
  • Facilitate and engage conversations, interactions, and art-making between students and artists.
  • Develop, supervise, and participate in camp-wide programming activities, including but not limited to artist workshops and the final arts showcase.
  • Work cooperatively with other Camp Counselors to ensure camper safety, maintain adequate health and hygiene measures, and create a positive environment.
  • Build relationships with all campers by showing compassion, empathy, and understanding
  • Chaperone students via bus on all excursions and ensure camper safety at excursion locations.
  • Take roll call at the beginning and end of every activity and a daily lunch count each morning.
  • Abide by all Pawtucket School District building procedures and protocols.
  • Aid and mentor students’ creative work.
  • Gather, organize, and distribute materials.
  • Provide positive feedback for parents.
  • Participate in and document evaluation of individual sessions and overall camp impact.
Qualifications:
  • Previous experience working with middle school-aged children, preferred.
  • Ability to work and communicate properly with a team and with middle-school aged students.
  • Ability to adapt and problem solve.
  • Highly energetic and enthusiastic leader.
  • Values diversity, equity, inclusion.
  • Previous camp or teaching experience with young people.
  • Experience in any artistic medium is strongly preferred.
  • Bilingual preferred (English/Spanish/Portuguese)
  • CPR/First Aid Certified (preferred, but not required).
