City of Providence Announces 2024 PVDFest Dates
March 12, 2024

Creative Capital’s Signature Event Returns Downtown September 2024

PROVIDENCE, RI – Mayor Brett P. Smiley today announced that PVDFest will take place on September 6-7, 2024, transforming downtown Providence into a bustling hub of artistic expression, live music, food and more. In partnership with FirstWorks, the signature event welcomes thousands of attendees of all ages to celebrate the rich cultural tapestry of Providence through sensational art installations, world-class cuisine, and expertly curated performances to delight the senses.

“I am thrilled to share that we are hosting PVDFest again this year,” said Mayor Brett P. Smiley. “We welcome everyone, from near and far, to join us in the heart of Providence this September for a showcase of creativity, culture, and community. Whether you’re a longtime resident or a first-time visitor, PVDFest promises an unforgettable experience that highlights Providence as a vibrant, diverse, and truly unique destination.”

In the coming months, the City will announce an exciting lineup of local and international artists and performers, spanning genres and disciplines. Attendees can expect an eclectic mix of live music performances, art installations, craft markets, and food vendors showcasing global cuisines. The dynamic festival invites participation from all ages, making it a perfect outing or weekend destination for families, music lovers, art enthusiasts, and anyone seeking a vibrant cultural experience unlike any event in the region.

“There is no event that more fully exemplifies FirstWorks’ vision to be a leading cultural partner connecting art with audiences than PVDFest. As we celebrate our 20-year anniversary, we are thrilled to mark a decade of curating astonishing spectacles at what has become renowned as Providence’s signature celebration,” said Kathleen Pletcher, Executive Artistic Director of FirstWorks, the Providence non-profit that co-founded the festival. “We are delighted to once again transform downtown Providence into a multistage arts extravaganza for all ages, spotlighting local talents and creating indelible memories for all ages.”

This year’s festival returns Downtown and will celebrate 10 years of arts and music festivals in Kennedy Plaza, beginning in 2014 with FirstWorks’ Urban Carnevale. Additionally, given the impacts of climate change globally, particularly in coastal communities, Sunday September 8, 2024 will be held for a rain date for festival activities. While no festival programming is scheduled for Sunday at this time, partners are encouraged to produce indoor or low impact events that can be promoted by the festival rain or shine.

“We look forward to another 10 years and beyond of festival programming Downtown and throughout our great city,” said Joe Wilson Jr., Director of Providence’s Department of Art, Culture and Tourism. “PVDFest 2024 promises to be an exciting, dynamic expression of our Creative Capital. The festival will highlight the incredible talent within our city and from around the world, while also creating a space for meaningful engagement and inspiration. We can’t wait to invite our community to come together and celebrate the joy and spirit of Providence at PVDFest.”

The city recently put out a call for PVDFest public art for two new and original works to be installed Downtown beginning in August 2024. Artists will choose from the following sites to install their works for up to one year: outside City Hall at the corner of Washington and Dorrance streets, at Empire Plaza, or on the Washington Street façade of the Civic Center Garage.

Festival programming is currently underway for the event of the year. Artists, performers, and vendors are encouraged to apply at pvdfest.com.
